ZYTEC™ XT Exterior

ZYTEC™ XT is a surface treatment consisting of:

  1. a base layer of electrolytically deposited zinc
  2. a phosphate layer
  3. an electrolytically deposited non-metallic layer
  4. and a mechanically applied top coat

 

The coating layers combines the best of several systems which results in a high corrosion resistant, strong and durable surface treatment.

ZYTEC™ XT Coating Features

  •  Barrier Coating – The organic topcoat acts like a barrier giving extra protection and is widely known as being preferable for preservative wood.
  • Chromium Free – The surface treatment is chrome free and contains neither Cr3 nor Cr6.
  • Acid resistant – Resistant to most acids found naturally in various wood types.
  • Cathodic Protection – Given scratches or other minor damages to the surface treatment, the screw is still protected due to the self-sacrificing action of the zinc layer.
  • Wood Color Match – Good color match to camouflage the screw head in various colors of wood.

ZYTEC™ XT Typical Usage

Tested and recognized for use in most ground contact pressure treated lumber for general exterior construction as described by the American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) U1 UC4A or below.

For environments above UC4A, use proper grade of stainless steel.

Always assess the environment before selecting the type of coated fastener. Some corrosive environments including exposure to water, airborne salt, chemicals and pressure treated lumber rated above AWPA UC4A may cause early failure.

ZYTEC™+ is a surface treatment consisting of:

  1. a base layer of electrolytically deposited zinc
  2. On top of the zinc layer is a chromate layer
  3. On top of the two base layers is a transparent sealer to seal off and protect the zinc and chromate layers. This type of coating gives the fastener a shiny silver-like color and a durable smooth surface finish.

ZYTEC™+ Coating Features

  • Superior Interior – Greater corrosion resistance than traditional basic zinc coatings due to the chromate layer and the transparent top sealer.
  • Chromium 6 Free – Environmentally friendly solution not containing hexavalent chromium.
  • Cathodic Protection – Given scratches or other minor damages to the surface treatment, the screw is still protected due to the self-sacrificing action of the zinc layer.
  • Suitable for Coating – The surface treatment is suitable for subsequent powder coating of the head.

ZYTEC™+ Typical Usage

Compatible for use in a wide variety of interior wood applications. Its use is limited to interior untreated lumber.

For exterior applications and use in pressure treated lumber, use exterior coated fasteners or stainless steel fasteners.

Always assess the environment before selecting the type of coated fastener. Some
corrosive environments including bathrooms, kitchen sinks, exposure to chemicals and use of pressure treated lumber may cause early failure. See next page for more info.

AISI 316 Stainless Steel

Description

AISI 316 stainless steel is a high grade chromium-nickel steel with austenitic microstructure, giving it excellent corrosion resistance, ductility and strength. With its content of molybdenum it provides exceptional corrosion resistance, particularly in marine applications and this makes it suitable for and extremely tough environments. It is inherently nonmagnetic and has excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and has no risk of hydrogen embrittlement.

Material Features

  • Contains chromium, nickel and molybdenum for corrosion resistance in marine environments.
  • Exceptional corrosion resistance
  • Austenitic microstructure
  • No risk of hydrogen embrittlement
  • High ductility for compensating flex and movements of boards.

Typical Usage

Stainless steel AISI 316 is code compliant for use in marine environments with saltwater splash, airborne salts, and areas with de-icing salts.

Always assess the environment before selecting the type of fastener material. Some corrosive environments including exposure to airborne salt, chemicals, chlorine and pressure treated lumber with higher retention levels may cause
early failure.

Stainless Steel

Description

AISI 302, 304, and 305 are chromium- nickel stainless steels with austenitic microstructure providing excellent corrosion resistance, ductility and strength. It is inherently non-magnetic and has no risk of hydrogen embrittlement. The presence of chromium and nickel ensures corrosion resistance by forming a passive oxide layer on the screw surface and makes it a great choice for use in acidic woods like redwood and cedar.

Typical Usage
